A father and son have drowned at a popular swimming spot in Queensland’s far north.The 59-year-old father and his 21-year-old son got into trouble at The Crystal Cascades waterfall near Cairns just after 5pm on Tuesday.

Media reports identified them as Melbourne men Sisira Gajanayake and his son, Themiya Gajanayake, who were on holiday with more than a dozen other family members and friends.“He threw himself in harm’s way to try and save him, and unfortunately, they both passed,” family friend Damien Gamage told the broadcaster at a gathering in Melbourne to mourn the men.
