Deputy Director of the FBI Paul Abbate warned hostile nations like Russia, China and Iran, were no longer just providing safe havens for criminals but were facilitating unlawful activity.

Each of those countries that I cited – Russia, China, Iran, actually leverage criminals, nefarious cyber actors, to commit attacks against our countries, to steal from our countries, to break the laws within our countries.

“So you have a hybrid coming together there - of the criminal hackers with the nation state. It’s more complex than ever, we’ve seen it evolve in this way." “The reasons behind that are many, it impacts our economic security in terms of billions of dollars in fraud losses that we see perpetrated by these groups and even more importantly it impacts people’s lives, health, safety and welfare.

Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission CEO Michael Phelan acknowledged a globalisation of organised crime was present on our own home soil. AFP Commissioner Reece Kershaw said international crime groups will continue to target Australia and stressed the importance of the FELEG alliance in protecting national borders.
