In the U.S., contraceptive pills require a prescription, unlike in over 100 countries where oral contraceptives are available over-the-counter.
A U.S. Food and Drug Administration advisory panel has unanimously recommended making a long-standing birth control pill available for purchase without a prescription.
The panel stated during a joint meeting to cast their votes that they believed the public had enough data to be confident enough to use the drug on their own without seeing a health provider. Opill was first approved by the FDA in 1973 but has always required a prescription. Currently, all contraceptive pills in the U.S. require a prescription.
