Children 6 months and older were granted approval to receive the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines on Friday.

Moderna and Pfizer vaccines approved for use in children 6 months and older. Exeter, N.H. 2021CLEVELAND, Ohio — The U.S. Food and Drug Administration Friday granted approval of the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines for use in children 6 months and older. The announcement came on the heels of Wednesday’s unanimous recommendation by members of the FDA’s Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee.

The effectiveness of the vaccines was determined by comparing the immune responses in children with the immune responses in adults in previous studies, according to Dr. Peter Marks, director of the FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research. The low predicted vaccination rates in young children is something the FDA acknowledges as a problem .

“Statistics like these are unnerving,” Califf said. “By vaccinating our youngest children, we hope to prevent the most devastating consequences of COVID, and by extension providing benefits to their families and communities.”
