An award-winning gastropub is worried it could be forced to close if plans to replace a water pipeline running through the Ribble Valley are approved.
If given the green light, the water tunnel scheme will see work rip through the Forest of Bowland and huge parts of the Ribble Valley, lasting up to 10 years. Plans include tunnelling, rural road widening, work compounds, HGV lorry routes and temporary bridges built across the rivers Ribble and Hodder.The new 110 kilometre-long pipeline would run from the Lake District to Greater Manchester and is designed to replace the current, aging water mains.
Kathy continued that the pub's "great reputation" is helping to keep it going, amidst the challenges of rising energy costs, staffing shortages and soaring inflation currently battering the hospitality industry. But that would be "reduced to nil" by the water pipe works. "Am I going to get compensation? What is going to happen? I am not planning on selling the lease, but it means my lease is worthless? I understand they need water, but it's an area of huge, outstanding national beauty and it's going to impact the environment a great deal. Nobody's given me a proposed start date and proposed finish date, I'm just in limbo."
