Despite self-harming in front of staff, Finks boss Brent Reker was moved out of a mental health support unit and into a cell without a psychiatric assessment because medical staff feared him.

Finks bikie boss Brent Reker had “ruthless” tattooed above his right eye. He was physically imposing, and prison staff feared him.

A prison employee on Monday told the Coroners Court: “There was a lot of angst around the feeling the Forensicare team had with Mr Reker at the time. His demeanour was not like that of the other prisoners. He was a much bigger man in stature, and the rest of the unit prisoners, they seemed to really look up to him, and I recalled that being a big issue at the time .”

Day one of the inquest into Reker’s death heard there was a perception that the bikie leader had an influence over other inmates and there were suggestions he had been orchestrating plans for a mass self-harming incident. In November 2018, he was remanded in custody for 19 days, during which he attempted to take his own life twice and planned to do so on a third occasion, the inquest heard.
