🔴 Fears British-Egyptian activist could die within days as Rishi Sunak raises case at COP27 The pro-democracy activist's family say his mother failed to hear from him on Monday - days after he began a water strike
The 40-year-old, whose mother was born in Britain, was most recently sentenced to a further five years on charges of “spreading false news” in December 2021.
“We urgently need the British team in Egypt to establish proof of life. We need to know if Alaa is even alive.” An official readout said: “The Prime Minister raised the case of Alaa Abd el-Fattah, stressing the UK Government’s deep concern on this issue. Mr Abd El-Fattah’s sister Sanaa Seif, who has travelled to the summit to raise her brother’s plight, said her family is “pinning our hopes” on the Prime Minister’s efforts to help.
“I felt all of a sudden when Alaa stopped water that we were suddenly getting these calls, phone calls, we were getting the letter from the Prime Minister. So, it feels like they realised the urgency all of a sudden. We’ve been warning them that this is coming.”
