One man has been found clinging to a floating item after the group of four men left Clump Point near Mission Beach on Friday.
The group of four set off from Clump Point near Mission Beach on Friday, and police said the group reported engine issues on the weekend.
Emergency services were notified on Sunday morning after the men failed to return and an aerial and water search commenced. Mission Helicopters co-owner Ray Cronin said he and a crew member were able to locate one survivor about 4:30pm on Sunday."Because of the shape of the buoy and the contrast of the colour we were able to pick him out … otherwise it's like a needle in a haystack with all the whitecaps around."
Mr Cronin said the helicopter remained in the air around the survivor until other search and rescue personnel could pull him from the water. "The important thing when you identify survivors is not to lose visual contact with them because it is so difficult in those conditions to re-identify them," he said."Eventually an armada of civilian, police, and other rescue boats converged on the location and took him onboard."One man was found floating, clinging to an item near the North Barnard Islands yesterday.
