"In some stations' cases there's been an 80-100 per cent drop in revenue as the music industry, especially live music, has ground to a halt," he said. Community broadcasters' annual fundraising and membership drives usually begin in May through to August, but amid the pandemic's economic impact, it's unlikely these initiatives will generate the same revenue boost they used to for stations.
"Currently the NT is at the lower end of the spectrum in terms of COVID-19 cases, however the potential severity of the impact of community transmission if it takes place here is massive, as we have some of the most vulnerable populations in Australia," 8CCC station manager Benjamin Erin told Nine.com.
"It is important that community broadcasting continues because it is the heart and soul of many communities, and at a time when mental health issues are going to be on the rise because of a loss of connection, community broadcasting should be part of the way we continue remaining connected in society," Mr Erin said.
