Labor will not be supporting the government’s 23.9 per cent tax to GDP cap.“The reason we’re not attracted to it is because it seems to us like quite an arbitrary cap imposed for political reasons rather than good economic reasons.
“But I think that we said for some time now that the arbitrary tax cap that the government has imposed, which the government doesn’t hit by the way in the forwards ... is something that they say to try to have a political argument rather than to try to generate a genuine economic outcome.” Labor says there is a fiscal gap that will need to be addressed and outlines three actions Chalmers says will improve the gap.
“We’re looking for ways to make the budget more sustainable. But mostly, we’re looking for ways to make the budget deliver a measurable economic improvement.
