Hobart's planned stadium may have just increased in cost for Tasmania. So whose fault is it?

The Tasmanian government is voicing its anger over federal Treasurer Jim Chalmers ' decision to not exempt $240 million in Commonwealth funding for Macquarie Point from the state's GST calculations.

Dr Chalmers' confirmation follows over 12 months of pleading by Tasmanian Treasurer and Deputy Premier Michael Ferguson, including four letters to Dr Chalmers."Until now, we have worked very respectfully and cooperatively with our federal counterparts. The gloves are off now, we are not going to be playing nice on this matter," he said.

It was seen as the final funding needed to ensure the stadium would go ahead, and therefore a Tasmanian AFL team. During Senate estimates the next day, Sam Reinhardt — from Commonwealth Treasury — again suggested that Macquarie Point funding would not be exempt. It granted a GST exemption in 2024-25 for Northern Territory on-country learning, payments under the Social Housing Accelerator program and energy bill relief fund, and for Olympic and Paralympic infrastructure for the 2032 Brisbane Olympics.
