The Commonwealth anti-corruption commission will be able to investigate businesses that deal with government
The planned Commonwealth anti-corruption commission will be able to investigate businesses that deal with the government as part of a broad remit that covers “any person” in contact with public officials.
Mark Dreyfus says the government is “committed to legislating [a commission] by the end of the year”.and the relationships behind those transactions would probably come under scrutiny if they met the threshold of “serious or systemic” corruption. He said it would “investigate serious and systemic corruption across the Commonwealth public sector, including parliamentarians and staff, public officials and contracted service providers”.Mr Dreyfus later confirmed it would cover “all Commonwealth officials, including ministers, MPs, their staff and contractors”.
With parliament resuming this week, Mr Dreyfus said an early priority would be legislation to change the appointments process for the Human Rights Commission.led to the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions deferring the Australian body’s re-accreditation as an “A-class nation” from March this year to October 2023.Ms Finlay has strong Liberal Party ties and is closely aligned with a conservative think-tank, the Institute of Public Affairs.
