Federal politicians from both sides of the aisle, including Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles and Liberal Senator Sarah Henderson, have united to welcome a decision from a Victorian council to begin reinstating official Australia Day activities.

Federal politicians, including the Deputy Prime Minister, have presented a rare united front to support a Victorian council's big Australia Day move.

It would also include a resumption of citizenship ceremonies on January 26, as well as a halt to lobbying the federal government to change the date of Australia Day. Liberal Senator Sarah Henderson, who for six years was the federal member for Corangamite, which includes Greater Geelong, said the decision was a"powerful rejection of the divisive activism stoked by the Albanese Labor government".

"I am delighted that a new council has been elected which is prepared to get back to basics and put the community first. Australia Day is a time to unite and celebrate our shared values and achievements, not divide. Yet, under Labor, this important day is steadily being eroded," Senator Henderson said.

"Under Peter Dutton’s leadership, a core mission of a future Coalition government is to build national pride in our great country which is why we will fight to protect our traditions in the best interests of all Australians." “Australia Day is a day for all Australians to reflect, respect and celebrate. It has been the Government’s view that Australia Day should continue to be held on 26 January," the spokesperson said. However, Geelong Councillor Emma Sinclair, who opposed the motion, said she feared the decision would cause “harm” to Indigenous Australians.
