ICYMI: Feds, Muskeg Lake Cree Nation settle claim with $127M agreement, option to regain land

The two parties have settled Muskeg Lake’s claim regarding the 1919 Soldier Settlement, when a swath of land was taken from the community. The government is compensating Muskeg Lake with $127.9 million and giving the First Nation the option to have the same amount of land that was taken added to its reserve land.of reserve land to Canada to give to veterans returning from the First World War.

“While the initial decision of Canada to expropriate lands created hardship for our community, we survived,” Chief Kelly Wolfe said in a release on Thursday. “We view this settlement as an investment in our future — our future children and lands to ensure our continued success as a Nation.” Muskeg Lake submitted the claim, which concerned Canada’s breach of pre- and post-surrender obligations, in 2014 and it was accepted for negotiation in 2017. A settlement was reached in June 2021 and Muskeg Lake held a successful ratification vote in February 2022.

The agreement includes the option for the community to acquire up to 8,960 acres of land and have it added to its reserve. “We are taking an important step to renew and strengthen our relationship with Muskeg Lake Cree Nation,” said Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations Marc Miller. “This settlement helps address a past wrong and creates new opportunities for a brighter future as we continue to move forward together.”
