🍽️ This week in our Feeding Britain series jesslizthompson explains how food and cooking can help bridge divisions between communities

carried out in Denmark showed that refugees who received language teaching earned significantly more money over their lifetime than those who did not. Investment in language provision will therefore bring returns in the long term as it will significantly increase refugees’ employment rates and reduce dependency on welfare benefits sooner.

They told me that they would love to share their cooking skills with their community. This led me to start the organisation, where refugee home cooks teach their traditional cuisines to the public in cookery classes. Five years since I founded Migrateful, our 97 migrant chefs have taught more than 3000 cookery classes to 30,000 participants.

As one participant told us: “Somebody who’s never met a refugee might just have this image in their heads of what it might be like and maybe it’s a negative image… but when you get to know people, you can see the humanity. You know, [the cookery class] helps break down the stigma.”
