Ten shows will be presented at parks and recreation centers from Mid-City to San Ysidro through May 14
San Diego’s Fern Street Circus will kick off its 2023 neighborhood tour on Saturday, with plans for 10 free public performances in parks and community centers around Mid-City and southern San Diego through Mother’s Day.
This year’s circus show theme is “Hoy por ti, mañana por mí,” which translates from Spanish as “Today for you, tomorrow for me.” The show will offer lessons encouraging cooperation and working together toward a common goal. In past years, Fern Street circus themes have touched on storytelling themes such as immigration and access to health care.
“We have seen so much divisiveness over the last few years, between COVID and the strident political environment,” said John Highkin, Fern Street’s executive director, in a statement. “We wanted this show to take a gentler approach, to be all about kindness, generosity and cooperation, celebrating all the things that can bring communities together, rather than divide us.
In addition to the shows, there will be free pre-show concerts by students from Mariachi Victoria de San Diego and community health fairs hosted by Live Well San Diego. On Saturday and April 29, there will also be San Diego Humane Society mobile vet clinics, offering free and low-cost pet vaccinations, exams and microchipping.Memorial Park, 2975 Ocean View, Blvd., Logan HeightsPark de la Cruz, 3603 38th St., East San DiegoOfficer Jeremy Henwood Memorial Park, 4455 Wightman St.
