Ferrari thief who killed woman in fiery crash sentenced to 10 years jail

A 39-year-old unlicensed driver, who killed a woman when a stolen luxury car burst into flames in suburban North Perth, has been sentenced to more than 10 years in jail. The court heard he had to search for an instructional video on how to drive itPhilip Karel Nemec was high on methylamphetamine in May last year when he took the red Ferrari, worth about half a million dollars, from outside a business in West Perth.

The Supreme Court was told the keys were in the ignition, but Nemec had to look up on YouTube how to use its gears, before he drove away and picked up a friend — a 40-year-old woman — whose name is suppressed. They were waiting in traffic at lights at the intersection of Charles and Vincent Streets when a police car spotted the Ferrari, which had been reported stolen by its owner.Nemec then drove at speed onto the wrong side of Vincent Street, through a red light, and as another police vehicle approached him, he lost control of the car and hit a guard rail.Nemec was treated in hospital for burns, before being arrested and charged with car theft and unlawful killing. The fiery crash left one woman dead.

Justice Michael Corboy said the case was another example of "the tragic consequences" of someone driving under the influence of methylamphetamine. He said there was no suggestion that the woman, whose family watched proceedings via video link from another location, knew the car was stolen.Justice Corboy described Nemec's driving as "dangerous and grossly negligent" saying he had "predictably, but tragically" lost control of a powerful car that was so "unfamiliar" to him, he had to look up on YouTube how to drive it.He will have to serve eight years and six months before he can be released.
