Millions of people are sweltering through an autumn scorcher in Australia's southeast, with a heatwave warning issued for four states. Residents in four states are experiencing stifling conditions, with soaring temperatures for a long weekend in many parts of the country. South Australia, Victoria, NSW and Tasmania were set to experience the conditions from Saturday to Monday.
The bureau warned a severe heatwave sweeping the state's south was likely to be felt across a large area including Melbourne, Ballarat, Horsham, Warrnambool and Bairnsdale. Melbourne was tipped to reach a top of 39C on Saturday, while conditions were set to hit 41C at Warrnambool, Torquay and Avalon. The state's central district was slated to reach 41C and 40C was forecast for popular holiday towns along the Murray River.
