West Coast Fever have claimed their first Super Netball premiership, downing the Melbourne Vixens in front of a parochial home crowd in Perth on Sunday night to end a 25-year title drought, 70-59.
The Vixens were unable to stop the Fever, who barely made a slip up. Fowler was incredible, particularly in the third quarter where she held on to a number of long and high entries that would have otherwise gone out. With two minutes to go in the second term, West Coast called a time-out. Coach Dan Ryan gave the message, “This is time and tempo for us”, calling for aggression in attack.
In the other huddle, Vixens co-captain Liz Watson told the squad they had weathered a few storms so far from the opposition, but needed to take control of game. Then with just 36 seconds to go, Melbourne called a time-out to try and stop the flow of goals against them, where the main message was to make sure they found their feet and took advantage of options.
