Fewer ghost guns seized by deputes in 2022 than in 2021; firearm deaths drop slightly [Breaking]
The number of ghost guns seized by county sheriff’s deputies fell last year by about 30 percent when compared to 2021 — a decline likely fueled by an ordinance passed in 2022 banning the non-serialized weapons.
In January 2022, the county passed an ordinance making it illegal to possess or distribute gun parts without serial numbers, treating unfinished firearm parts just like a completed gun. The new law also prohibits 3-D printing of non-serialized firearms and their parts. The city of San Diego passed a similar ordinance at the beginning of last year.
The Sheriff’s Department also collected more than 1,500 firearms during six gun buyback events held from 2021 to 2022. During the events, community members can exchange firearms for gift cards.
