The journey to the summit that the FIFA Women's World Cup now occupies has either been incredibly fast, or terribly slow, depending on who you talk to.
Saudi Arabia is not amongst the newcomers, but the country hopes to be good enough to qualify for the next world cup in 2027."Saudi Arabia is actually a perfect example, where there are a lot of negative perceptions around that country and in particular, the position of women in that country," Bareman said.
"They are set on a very different foundation to us a very different religious background, a very different cultural background, and they develop, and they move forward and progress in their own timeline. "[Lamia] is an incredible woman and because of the negative perceptions around the country, nobody actually wants to look at that and understand how much progress has been made there," Bareman said.
Bareman describes it as the 'Women's World Cup effect', where the impact of women playing on a world stage resonates far beyond the football pitch."In France in 2019 … the president of the Moroccan federation was at the finals … he saw the full stadium, the crowd going absolutely nuts.""He witnessed the amazing spectacle that was happening on the pitch, the sport itself.
