The fight over tariffs on auto imports approaches a deadline in Washington
The Commerce Department submitted its report on the investigation to the White House in February. It's hard to say whether the earlier steel and aluminum tariffs show what might happen with autos, Bown said. The tariff threat could also morph into quotas on imports, instead of tariffs per se, he said. The tariffs could just be a bargaining chip, too, Bown said — but then again, they might not be. “Clearly, the Trump Administration initiated the national security case because the president feels as though it gives him leverage,” Bown said.
