“We all come from different parts of the country and like staying in our own little worlds during down time. But when it’s anything [about] music, we all come together,” Mo tells. One particularly memorable jam session — that he recalls as “random and unplanned” — resulted in their debut song. “Prior to joining Alamat, I wasn’t as aware of how beautiful our culture is because I did grow up on American TV series and just Western music in general,” Jao says. “But being here has opened my eyes to the diversity of the Philippines and the need to support our own so we can continue spotlighting how unique we are to the rest of the world. I hope our fans feel the same way whenever they listen to us.
This sentiment is echoed by the rest of the group, especially Taneo, who spent his teenage years in the States and graduated with a degree in accountancy from the University of South Florida. “When the opportunity to be part of a group like Alamat presented itself, I made the impulsive decision to come home. I guess I just believed in the concept that much.”
