Melbourne will be completely cut off from the rest of the country tonight as a new lockdown begins in a bid to control the coronavirus crisis. 9News

It was the second day running in triple figures, after Monday saw 127 new cases.

Chief Health Officer Professor Brett Sutton said the new lockdown was "awful advice to have to give to any government" but "absolutely necessary"."It's been faster than in wave one, and in many respects it's faster than in some other waves across the world."The Victoria-NSW border has been closed since midnight, except to anyone entering from Victoria who meets strict criteria for work or healthcare, or on compassionate grounds considered case by case.

"This is one of the most dramatic public health decisions in 100 years. It is the first closure of the border in 100 years" Mr Hunt said. "Right across the country, the combination of border control, testing, tracing, and distancing has allowed us to flatten the curve," he said.
