The Tasmanian government's commitment to 'local content' in the new Spirit of Tasmania ferries has been questioned after it was revealed that Finnish-built engines are part of the project.

Some of the $100 million allocated for ' local content ' aboard the new Spirit of Tasmania ferries has been spent on Finnish-built ship engines.Finnish-built ship engines have been included in the so-called ' local content ' in the new Spirit of Tasmania ferries. Tasmanian Labor leader Dean Winter called the revelation 'another lie from a government that has completely bungled this project'. Cabinet MP Jane Howlett dismissed Mr Winter's claims and said the government was 'getting on with the job'.

The company, is also responsible for 'auxiliary gensets with GVUs' and 'LNG Pacs', though no further detail is provided in the documents to explain the nature of these items. The TT-Line spokesperson did not confirm how much the main engines cost, saying costs 'are a commercial arrangement between RMC and Wärtsilä'.Mr Winter said the arrangement 'doesn't pass the pub test'. 'We were told that this would be local content, local suppliers, local workers contributing to these new ships,' he sai
