Fire causes an estimated $1.1 million in damage at Talmadge home [Breaking]
A fire at a home in the Talmadge neighborhood caused an estimated $1.1 million in damage and displaced four residents early Monday morning, San Diego fire offcials said.
The blaze was reported shortly before 3 a.m. at the home on 47th Street near Aldine Drive, and by time firefighters arrived there was heavy smoke and fire coming from the front of the building, San Diego Fire-Rescue Battalion Chief Dave Pilkerton said. The blaze threatened a neighboring garage but crews were able to keep it from spreading, Pilkerton said. Crews had flames knocked down just before 3:35 a.m.
Fire officials said vehicles and outbuildings on the property also caught fire. No one was injured and four adults were displaced. The Red Cross was called in to assist them with temporary lodging.The fire gutted the house, causing an estimated $1 million loss to the structure and $100,000 in damage to the home’s contents, officials said.Battalion Chief Mike McBride told OnScene TV that the fire may have started in the garage or an an outbuilding on the property.
He said the family was inside the home when one of the residents “heard a small explosion or crashing type of sound” and spotted the fire. McBride said that resident was able to alert the rest of the family and “get everybody out of the home.”
