An emergency operation is underway to allow for the 'make-safe demolition' of two buildings impacted by the colossal fire in central Sydney's Surry Hills last Thursday.
NSW Police announced on Monday afternoon clean-up proceedings were underway as part of preparations for Fire and Rescue NSW to demolish the charred seven-storey building near central Sydney, along with another nearby building burnt by the fire.
The Surry Hills fire led to extensive damage in the historic building, with parts of its burnt-up brick walls crashing down on the street below. “Heat damage had been causing the windows to become unstable and fall out without notice, representing a safety risk within the fire ground,” FRNSW said. The high-impact fire has led to the displacement of at least 100 residents from the area with many people being provided temporary accommodation through Welfare Services.
Those living and working in proximity of Randle Street are urged to close doors and windows while the operation is ongoing to avoid being exposed to dust and debris.Engineers and experts from NSW Public Works have been working closely with the building owners and their contractors to develop make-safe demolition plans.
