Fire damages N.J. elementary school a week before start of classes

It is unclear if the damage will delay the opening of the school, a district official said.

A fire broke out early Monday inside an elementary school in Newark, just a week before the classes are scheduled to begin, authorities said.The Newark Fire Department was called at about 4 a.m. after a report of smoke coming from the building, authorities said.to get inside the building and were able to quickly extinguish the flames.

Nancy J. Deering, spokeswoman for the Newark Board of Education, could not say for sure if the school will reopen for the first day of school on Sept. 5. “The cause of the fire is under investigation and the extent of the damage is being assessed,” Deering said in a statement. “The district began working diligently to ensure the building is safe and ready to receive students and staff next week,” Deering said.

Deering said the district plans to keep staff, students and families updated as to whether school will reopen on time.
