South Australian authorities warn the fire threat on Kangaroo Island is far from over with flare-ups likely to continue every day for several weeks.

Firefighters are taking advantage of more favourable conditions this week, but warmer afternoon weather will spark increased fire activity. The Country Fire Service said crews would be able to contain a major blaze, but it would be a "long time" before the area was declared safe.

Nine homes have been destroyed in the past week, with 210,000 hectares razed since last month. Fire crews are now conducting backburning and are close to securing the perimeter of the blaze. Nearly 400 firefighters remain in the region as well as 651 army reserves who are assisting in the recovery effort. Image: CFS
