A 39-year-old man was arrested at Sydney Airport after a firearm was allegedly discovered in his checked baggage. The man was attempting to board a flight to Lebanon when the weapon was found during a security screening. He now faces charges related to firearms trafficking.
A 39-year-old man from South Wentworthville is set to face court today after a firearm was allegedly found in his luggage during a security screening at Sydney Airport . A security worker monitoring an x-ray machine raised the alarm after allegedly identifying suspicious items in the man's checked baggage on December 28. AFP officers were called to inspect the luggage and allegedly found parts of a disassembled shotgun and ammunition.
The man had been intending to catch a flight to Lebanon but was stopped from boarding. The man is now facing charges relating to trafficking firearms, which come with a maximum jail time of 20 years. AFP Detective Acting Superintendent Dom Stephenson said the AFP worked closely with the aviation industry and other partners to prevent illegal activity through airports and keep workers and travellers safe. 'There was allegedly an initial claim that the weapon was a 'drenching gun' used for agricultural farming. However, the AFP subsequently determined the weapon was a shotgun broken down into two parts. This is a serious weapon with the potential to cause real harm,' Stephenson said. 'Security screening staff at the airport were vigilant and along with AFP officers, acted quickly to ensure the safety of the travelling public and stop weapons being taken offshore.
