‘Firebombed my car’: Boxer’s shock turn from Anzac villain to Tszyu rival
Ryan Mitchem has lost a brother to drugs, a mother to cancer and more than one close mate to that other great bastard, depression.Aware this may be the only way for anyone to truly understand who he is.
“It’s burning and it’s gone,” the boxer is heard saying in a video he posted soon after to social media.Almost immediately, his social media blew up.“Firebombed,” he shrugs of an aftermath which not only caused outrage across the State, but saw police shadowing his house and his mate eventually fronting court before a scrum of cameras, where he too apologised and was fined $1600.
Despite being a rank outsider for the national title, Mitchem knows a win on No Limit’s latest fight night headliner will not only earn him immediate recognition, or that gold strap, but a crack at the young super welterweight every bloke in the country wants — Nikita Tszyu.
But first, that infamous night back in June, 2021, where Mitchem never extinguished Brisbane’s eternal flame, but filmed the bloke who did.“But I now have a chance,” he says, “to help others.”
