The noise from a ship offloading fuel at the Port of Alaska was the result of an ignition of fuel vapor within one of the ship’s boiler stacks, officials said.
Vessels at the Port of Alaska in Anchorage in January 2022 included the Matson container ship Tacoma, left, and the tanker Redwood Mariner.
“At approximately 10 p.m., thick, black smoke was seen billowing from the exhaust stack of the 600-foot foreign-flagged tank vessel, following by a loud boom and flames,” said a written statement from the U.S. Coast Guard. Coast Guard officials “are onboard Atlantic Lily and monitoring the situation. Fuel off-loading resumed and technicians are making repairs,” the city said.
