A year after a cyber attack exposed the personal details of millions of Optus customers, the telco boss is on another apology tour. She seems to have learned nothing, writes business editor Ian Verrender.
It makes billions of dollars each year putting people together via the most sophisticated technology on the planet so they can get their message across to one another instantly.
Once again, Australians awoke to what appeared to be a collapse in the nation's telecommunications network following an undeclared problem at Optus. The episode quickly descended into farce with Ms Bayer Rosmarin initially missing in action before declaring the data breach was the result of a high tech hack, which it wasn't. She later claimed no data had been stolen because everything was encrypted, which it wasn't.Optus CEO Kelly Bayer Rosmarin says "a technical network fault" is to blame for the company's nationwide outage on Wednesday.
"This may help others in the private and public sector where sensitive data is held and risk of cyber attack exists," she said. In what could be taken as a re-run of last year's remedial efforts, she promised a "thorough, root-cause analysis" before more information could be provided.
