A Western Sydney man becomes the first individual charged under Operation Avalite, a special initiative by the Australian Federal Police targeting antisemitism.

A 44-year-old man from Blacktown, Western Sydney , has been charged with allegedly making death threats against members of a Jewish organization. This marks the first time someone has been charged under the Australian Federal Police's ( AFP ) Special Operation Avalite , launched in December 2022 to combat antisemitism. The man faces two charges: using a carriage service to make a threat to kill and using a carriage service to menace, harass, or cause offence.

During a search of his home on Thursday, police seized electronic devices and documents. AFP Counter Terrorism and Special Investigations Command Assistant Commissioner Stephen Nutt confirmed these are the first charges laid under Operation Avalite, which consists of 21 officers and analysts. Assistant Commissioner Nutt stated that the operation targets high-harm, repeat antisemites and is committed to identifying prolific individuals causing significant harm within the community. He described targeting and threatening individuals based on their race or religion as 'abhorrent' and emphasized the AFP's commitment to protecting Australians and their way of life. Assistant Commissioner Nutt warned antisemites that engaging in such conduct will lead to investigation and prosecution to the fullest extent of the law
