The first shipment of Australian coal to China in more than two years has docked at the southern port of Zhanjiang, state media reports.
The newspaper quoted “insiders” saying coal from the ship, which left Australia on January 24, would be delivered to a local production base of Baoshan IronBloomberg also reported the vessel was anchored off Zhanjiang, a steel production hub in China, on Thursday morning. Bloomberg said a second coal shipment from Australia was expected to dock in China later this month.
China unofficially banned Australian coal in 2020 along with restrictions on other key Australian exports, including wine, barley, beef and seafood. “The breakthroughs are within expectations, reflecting the general trend of the restoration of China-Australia economic and trade relations,” Wang Shiming, a professor at the School of Politics and International Relations of East China Normal University, was quoted as saying by the“There is huge room for economic and trade co-operation, including deepening co-operation in third-party markets.
