Devastating flooding is adding to the debate about what Australia might do to mitigate more frequent and extreme weather disasters.
on the eastern seaboard are part of what is perhaps an unprecedented sequence of natural disasters. First there was the drought that extended into 2019, followed by the inferno summer bushfires of 2019-20. Then came the two years of the once-in-a-century global pandemic. The flooding in Brisbane, southern Queensland and northern NSW now extends into parts of Greater Sydney and the NSW south coast.
But, like the drought and bushfires, the flood crisis is adding to the debate about a warmer climate, and what Australia might do to mitigate more frequent and bigger extreme weather disasters. Perversely, this will make it harder for low-income people to afford the flood cover they need most of all. . Amid a third weather-related natural disaster in four years, Labor’s political attack is focusing on the $4.8 billion Emergency Response Fund Mr Morrison established in 2019, questioning why more of that money hasn’t been used to fund disaster mitigation and resilience projects.
