Victoria's 30th governor who is 'actually a republican' was inaugurated on Wednesday, with Daniel Andrews celebrating the fact the ceremony included a first for the state.

Members of the First Peoples' Assembly of Victoria were part of official proceedings as Professor Gardner assumed the role of the state's 30th governor.

"But it was also the first occasion on which a governor of Victoria has been sworn in with representatives of a democratically elected First People's Assembly. "And it speaks to the fact that Victorians know and understand how important it is that everybody is listened to and that when it comes to Aboriginal people and their hopes and aspirations, and the many challenges that Aboriginal people face, their voice is a very important part of that."

Prior to that, she was president and vice-chancellor of RMIT between 2005 and 2014. She has been described as a"prominent and well-respected academic". In her role as governor, Professor Gardner is King Charles III's representative in Victoria. She has moved to assure Victorians protocols will be followed"appropriately".
