“It was so raw,” says England. “It blew my mind. I remember these girls who had shaved their heads for him, and then stamped ‘McQueen’ on their skulls.“The whole thing was intoxicating, and sexy in a very strong way.” The scrappy operation suited England, who, after proving a dab hand at styling, became McQueen’s go-to woman for ideas and feedback, too.“We were starting from scratch, and we had no money. We needed shoes, we needed underwear, we needed models. We got shoes from charity shops and then we sprayed them black or white. We styled the models just before we sent them out. And they weren’t even really models.
