The Illinois Department of Public Health has announced 12 human cases of West Nile virus in the state, including the first one of the year in Kane County.
Cook, Macon, Madison, Will and Woodford counties have also reported individuals testing positive for West Nile virus, according to a press release from Kane County. The Illinois Department of Public Health said a person in their 90s who lived in suburban Cook County had an onset of symptoms of West Nile virus in early August and was the first person to die from virus in the state in 2023.
Four out of five people infected with West Nile virus will not show any symptoms, according to the release. However, in rare cases, severe illness can occur, including brain infections such as meningitis or encephalitis and paralysis or even death. The best way to prevent West Nile virus or any other mosquito-borne illness is to reduce the number of mosquitoes around a home and to take precautions to avoid mosquito bites, officials have said.
When outdoors, people should wear shoes and socks, long pants and a long-sleeved shirt, and apply insect repellent that includes DEET, picaridin or oil of lemon eucalyptus according to label instructions, according to officials.
