Rebecca Richards's PhD in anthropology is taking her back to the regional community she grew up in to explore photographic archives and preserve Ngarrindjeri stories.

Rebecca Richards is continuing her anthropological work with the Ngarrindjeri community in Barmera .Anthropologist Rebecca Richards is returning to her regional home town to continue her anthropology work in digital archive s with SA's Ngarrindjeri community.

The ambitious project has allowed anthropologist Rebecca Richards to reconnect with her own past while helping the Indigenous people of the country discover and archive their own. An artefact in the Ngarrindjeri Keeping Place Archive depicts two Ngarrindjeri women circa 1915 in Milang.The digital archive, Ngarrindjeri Keeping Place, highlights the role of community in preservation by documenting photographs from the 20th century onwards.

"Using this project, we're able to show that connecting with culture … has been giving better wellbeing and outcomes for the people who are participating in it."ABC Riverland: Will HunterThe project is expected to run for about a year before it is handed to the Ngarrindjeri community to continue to build.Living in Barmera, she said the Ngarrindjeri Keeping Place project means a lot to her after searching her whole life trying to find out who were grandparents were.

"It's taken my lifetime to find answers that could have been provided for me along the way, that could have made my life a little bit easier," she said. "If you have a supportive family, a bit of luck and a lot of hard work you can achieve the dreams that you want to do."
