Mitch Mahoney's ancestors used canoes made from tree bark to navigate the waters off Victoria's Bass Coast. Now, he has crafted a vessel using the same traditional methods.

Thousands of years ago, the ancestors of Aboriginal artist Mitch Mahoney used canoes made from stringybark trees to navigate waters around Victoria's Bass Coast region.First Nations artist Mitch Mahoney created a traditional canoe as part of a week-long public eventThe vessel will form part of an exhibition to launch a new cultural centre

He said there were many strong traditions of canoe-making right across Victoria, and other materials like river reed and red gum could also be used to build the vessels."It's everything from traversing long distances across the bays, to spending your afternoons and particularly your nights out fishing by firelight," he said.

Mr Mahoney said passing on cultural knowledge was extremely important and was something he aimed to do through his art. "These are the artworks that are going to be highly collectible in the future, they're just starting to pick up pace now."Mr McMahon said Baluk Arts was working towards an exhibition that would launch a new cultural centre in Cowes later this month.
