First phase of HS2 could cost ‘many billions’ above Government’s estimate, according to leaked report
A Tunnel Boring Machine in Ruislip which will begin excavating the high speed railway tunnels 24/7 for the next 2 years to create 5 miles of the 8.4 mile Northolt Tunnel for HS2 trains, which will travel to Old Oak Common. The total cost of the first phase of HS2 could be ‘many billions’ above estimate, it is claimed.
Phase One has a target cost of £40.3 billion, but the Government has previously said the “funding envelope” for it is £44.6 billion, which includes a contingency of £4.3 billion. Despite the revalations, the Government has insisted works on its major high speed rail line project are “within budget”.
