Michael Cheika says he is ready for another coaching gig. A Wallabies great says it’s time for him to return to NSW.

Wallabies great Simon Poidevin believes Michael Cheika should be Rugby Australia’s first choice as the next Waratahs coach because of how well he turned around a struggling NSW side more than a decade ago.

The Waratahs’ season ended on Friday night with a one-point loss to the Reds. It was their 12th defeat on Friday from 14 matches this season. It is the first time the Waratahs have finished as wooden spooners in a proper Super Rugby competition since professionalism was introduced in 1996. Poidevin, who played 59 Tests for Australia and was part of the grand-slam winning Wallabies of 1984, said the Waratahs needed an “urgent” fix.“If Cheik was available, he’d be the first priority because of his experience,” said Poidevin, who played alongside Cheika at Randwick.

“Stephen Hoiles is a brilliant coach and another leader of men. Nathan Grey is also an accomplished coach. Speaking to those three guys would be my priority.” “Cheika’s record from 2013 to 2015 speaks for itself. He’s returning to Sydney in July with his family from France.”, Cheika said he was ready for the next coaching challenge.
