The first public hearing into Victoria's hotel quarantine system will be held on July 20 and will investigate multiple breaches of the state's hotel quarantine system.
The first public hearing into Victoria's hotel quarantine system will be held on July 20. The inquiry will investigate multiple breaches of the state's hotel quarantine system in two hotels. However the inquiry has been criticised, with Liberal MP Andrew Wallace saying it will unlikely uncover anything of substance because it does not have the power to compel testimony.
“There’s no powers of compulsion… someone who’s called to give evidence could simply argue they don’t want to answer questions on the grounds they may incriminate themselves,” he told Sky News. The Prime Minister has also flagged a separate, nationwide review of hotel quarantine. In the interim, National Cabinet has agreed to ease pressure on the states by cutting the number of Australians returning home each week by over 4,000.

'Lack of clear-gun direction' responsible for Sydney Airport virus bungle | Sky News AustraliaTransport Workers Union National Secretary Michael Kaine says there is a 'lack of clear gun-direction' provided to workers and this led to a health breach at Sydney Airport. \n\nNSW Health is set to roll out new airport health protocols following a breach which allowed passengers on board a Jetstar flight from Melbourne to disembark and leave Sydney Airport without being screened for the virus. \n\nUnder the new measures, flights would not be allowed to land until NSW Health staff were in place ready to greet and screen all passengers. \n\nMr Kaine told Sky News 'there’s two things happening here, there’s a company that’s not taking this seriously and hasn’t since the start, and there’s of course a lack of clear-gun direction about what is to occur'. \n\n“It shouldn’t be Qantas deciding what our health standard should be here, it has to be the health authorities and the federal government needs to step in to make this clear,' he said. \n\n“The staff are trained to undertake and fulfill the directions that they’re given, now presumably there’s been a miscommunication here between health authorities. \n\n'There needs to be the training and directions with all staff to make sure that they’re not seen as the scapegoats.” \n\nImage: News Corp Australia

'Change in community attitude partly responsible' for Vic COVID-19 outbreak | Sky News AustraliaCornerstone Group Senior Director James Cullen says complacency was in part responsible for the resurgence in coronavirus cases in Victoria. \n\nMr Cullen told Sky News Black Lives Matter protests and the hotel quarantine breaches largely contributed to outbreaks occurring across the state but a shift away from social distancing behaviours in the wider community was also a key factor. \n\nHe said a “change in the community attitudes” became evident after the Prime Minister announced the easing of stage three restrictions several weeks ago. \n\n“I think that people then really started to drop some of the discipline around social distancing, for example,” he said. \n\n“Until we get that vaccine there is no back to normal so we do need to sort of exercise that discipline.” \n\nImage: Getty
