Christie’s historic auction series achieved an impressive 245% hammer price above its low estimate

Christie’s landmark Rothschild auction series—the first North American sales of objects belonging to one of the great collecting families in history—ended its first night Wednesday with total sales of US$43.237 million. The auction, titled Rothschild Masterpieces, achieved an impressive 245% hammer above the low estimate and 95% of lots sold.

The leading sale on Wednesday night was a 17th-century painting, Gerrit Dou’s A young woman holding a hare with a boy at a window, which surpassed its US$5 million high estimate to fetch US$7.06 million. The Triumph of David, a monumental series of painted and embossed leather panels from the Dutch School, circa 1650, realized US$4.4 million .

“The Rothschilds had this incredible appetite for the best,” said Dominic Simpson, Christie’s senior international consultant, European ceramics. “Not just of the grand, but also rare examples of a specific style or pieces of scholarly interest. They were legendary collectors in that way.” The series of three live sales ending Thursday include more than 600 lots of Italian Renaissance maiolica, hardstone boxes, silver and silver-gilt sculptures, European furniture and tapestries, Limoges enamels, Old Masters paintings, and Renaissance jewelry. Set to conclude on Oct. 17, a concurrent online auction offers a wide-ranging selection of furniture and objects in the classic Rothschild taste, with bidding starting at US$100 for all lots.

According to the auction notes, the Rothschild taste cast a profound influence on the great Gilded Age families of the U.S., including the Vanderbilts, Astors and Rockefellers, as well as more contemporary designers such as Yves Saint Laurent, who was inspired by the interiors of the Château de Ferrières during the decoration of his own home.
