A patient in Louisiana, over 65 years old with underlying medical conditions, has died from H5N1 bird flu, marking the first reported human death from the virus in the US. The patient was hospitalized on December 18th after exposure to backyard chickens and wild birds. The virus, of the D1.1 genotype, is similar to types found in recent cases in Washington State and Canada. While the risk to the general public remains low, people who work with birds or have recreational exposure are at higher risk.
