An off-duty officer has been praised for his efforts to save a 23-year-old surfer who was attacked by a great white shark on the New South Wales Mid North Coast.

An off-duty police officer walking their dog has leapt into action to help a young surfer who suffered serious injuries when he was bitten by a three-metre great white shark on the NSW Mid North Coast.

Kai McKenzie, 23, was seriously injured when he was attacked by a three-metre great white shark at a Port Macquarie beach on Tuesday morning. Picture: Instagram NSW Ambulance Service acting duty operations officer Kirran Mowbray commended the bystanders and off-duty policeman for the life-saving care.

" pretty amazing. For us as paramedics we don't see trauma like that every day, so for a bystander to come across and think that quick, using that dog's lead as a tourniquet to basically save his life is just incredible," Ms Mowbray said.
