A man is recovering in a Gold Coast hospital after being hit in the head by a whale's tail while out fishing with a friend on Sunday.

Authorities located the men and brought them back to shore.A fisherman is lucky to be alive after he was reportedly slapped across the face by a whale's tail in waters near the Queensland-New South Wales border.

Queensland Ambulance Service's Scott Brown, who was one of the first responders on scene, said it was the first time he had ever experienced such an "extremely rare" encounter."Just two guys having a morning fish, and then all of a sudden, a whale's tail appeared, striking one in the head," Mr Brown said."You have a little bit disbelief that it happened at first, but respond nonetheless, and when we got there, that's what we found had happened.

"Just be cautious that there are a lot of whales at this time of year in that area, and today has shown us that anything can happen."China's fifth Antarctic base has the world's spies watching.
