Australian universities’ performance on this year’s QS rankings is one of stagnation, rather than decline.

Several mid-ranking universities made serious gains. La Trobe University rose 46 places to 316, Swinburne was up 25 places to 296, and Deakin stepped up to 266, 17 places higher than last year. The University of Melbourne had the highest research output, producing 85,000 papers over five years, or 13 per cent of total Australian output. Its primary research strength is medicine, which accounted for 54 per cent of its scholarly output.
