Here are five of the key moments that made the Astros’ 8-7 win over the Seattle Mariners in Game 1 of the American League Division Series on Tuesday afternoon at Minute Maid Park.
Mariners 4, Astros 2After a scoreless third, Justin Verlander struck out the first two hitters in the fourth. But he couldn’t put it away, giving up a solo homer to No. 9 hitter J.P. Crawford. Julio Rodriguez followed with a triple and scored on Ty France’s single. Further damage was averted when France was thrown out at the plate by left fielder Yordan Alvarez to end the inning.Verlander was done and the Astros had to dip into their bullpen much earlier than anticipated.
Justin Verlander gave up consecutive hits to Adam Frazier and Jarred Kelenic, the light-hitting No. 7 and 8 hitters. After advancing a base on a fly ball, they both scored on Julio Rodriguez’s RBI double. Ty France then added an RBI single for a 4-0 Mariners lead.Verlander clearly didn’t have it in his first playoff start since Game 6 of the 2019 World Series.
